Crisis Comms in the Viral Age
Aussie skincare startup tbh skincare has been a hot topic this week after posting a TikTok following a trend where people chant in a circle, describing their personal characteristics and outfits. The clip went viral for the wrong reasons, and the backlash was intense.
What followed was an example of fast, strategic social media crisis comms, counteracting the unfounded vitriol with the brand’s sense of humour. In a second TikTok, the same employees chanted hate comments left on the post and the brand released the “Gen Z boss and a mini” kit (in reference to the original video). Founder Rachael Wilde also hit back on social media and in the press, denouncing the sexism in the social media commentary and death threats towards her staff.
By quickly addressing the hateful commentary with humour and transparency, supporting their team, denouncing the negative reactions, and turning the situation into a marketing opportunity, tbh skincare has shown how other brands can turn a potentially damaging event into a positive engagement, demonstrating strong leadership and resonating with their audience.

Nicole Jauncey, Co-Founder of ABEL I’m Nic, Co-Founder of ABEL and Co-Creator of two toddler ratbags. People and connections are what shape me; I love hearing different perspectives and understanding what makes people tick. From a work POV, it pushes my conceptual thinking to challenge the norm and it also aids me in leading a team of very different creative minds. |
A Ritual That Resonates: Before I get ‘woken up’ I read After School by Casey Lewis, just so I can feel like a ‘cool’ 22 year old girlie again. Then on my drive into the office I immerse myself in the latest Diary of a CEO ep. Two very different culture dip rituals that start my day off right. Culture that moves you: I love to read. I was a little late to the party on this one, but have just finished ‘A Little Life’ by Hanya Yanagihara. This book touched me deeply in a very confronting way - but there is also so much beauty in it. | Undiscovered Gems: I recently commissioned a painting from Emily Handlin. Not only is Em an incredible artist, I also have so much respect for her for leaving her high-flying 9-5 job in pursuit of more creativity and balance. CHECK HER OUT! |
